Bacon's Castle
Built in 1665, Bacon’s Castle is the oldest standing brick dwelling in the United States and was originally home to prosperous merchant and planter, Arthur Allen. In 1676, Allen was driven from his home by followers of Nathaniel Bacon, whose uprising later came to be known as Bacon’s Rebellion, for which Bacon’s Castle is now known. Preservation Virginia acquired Bacon’s Castle in 1974 and after extensive research and restoration, opened the house to the public in 1983. The site is open from March to December on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Guests can enjoy a guided tour of the property and browse the museum store. A cell phone tour is available dawn to dusk on days when the site is not open to the public.
