TIngle's Maps: Lost Woods (Ocarina of Time) - Zelda Universe

The forests of Hyrule are not to be trifled with, and the Lost Woods are the ultimate example of why. Mystical, magical, and nearly incomprehensible, no one, not even the natural residents of the forests, are able to take them lightly.

Can anyone briefly describe to me (a newbie to the LoZ universe) The Legend of Zelda? Like the origins and connection between games and the overall basic description of the universe.
